Background

Electronic Childcare Attendance (ECC) was designed to help track childcare attendance at provider locations for states in charge of funding childcare benefits, and to monitor attendance in order to prevent fraud in childcare provider locations.

Goals and Objectives

What is the problem?
We want to speed up the check-in process with unsupervised check-ins. We need to increase fraud prevention of the abuse of funds. We also want to increase communication between the state, provider and the parents while providing better reporting and data collection.

Prioritized Features
Provide easy check in/out, location-based attendance, kiosk app for Parents and Providers, and a separate parent app.

My Role and Responsibilities

  • Storyboard the scenarios and information architecture of the user flows.
  • Design the application to be inline with our company standards to create a white-label version of the application. This process includes designing high fidelity mockups and interactive prototypes.
  • Meet weekly with the design team to showcase different design concepts and gather feedback.
  • Meet weekly with members of the iOS and Android team to discuss the designs and native components of the application.
  • Create color convention guidelines for each team (Android and iOS).
  • Write accessibility labels for each team (Android and iOS).

Design Iterations

We went through many iterations over the course of this design. Scope and development capabilities impacted some of the ideas of the design features. We initially had an idea to have a beacon check-in system to allow for check-ins to be completed using geolocation or proximity. We also wanted to include a faster way to complete check-ins by having a QR code for easy scanning if the parent needed to physically walk into the location or if there was a scanner in the curbside line. Timelines caused this version of the app to be put in the backlog and we needed to reimagine another way to cover transactions in the first release. We eventually came to a solution to allow parents to use the mobile app to select children for attendance and complete the check-ins. If the parents forgot their phone or didn't have one, we designed the tablet/kiosk app to allow them to still complete attendance manually.
